Notice of Change: Calendar of Observances
May 27, 2025
The FSA has updated its approach to commemorating holidays, events, and commemorations. During the 2023–24 academic year, the FSA Board of Directors reviewed several options for revising the union’s calendar of observances. The Board ultimately authorized the Member Engagement Officer and Assistant Executive Director to develop an annually rotating list of observances, added to the FSA’s core union events.
This rotation allows the union to highlight different occasions each year. Observances will be marked differently each year, with emphasis shifting from one year to the next, based also on resources and capacity. A more prominent campaign in a given year may not receive the same attention the next; content from previous years may be reused for later observances.
All observances will be acknowledged in the E-Bulletin, with select ones also complemented with blog posts or events. In the coming academic year, the FSA will observe:
Labour Day
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Remembrance Day
International Day of Persons with Disabilities
National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Black History Month
International Women’s Day
Day of Mourning (for workers injured and killed on the job)
International Workers Day
Pride Month
National Indigenous History Month, including National Indigenous People’s Day (June 21)
If you’re interested in helping the FSA acknowledge any of these occasions in the upcoming year, please get in touch!
