Grievance Resolution Affecting Out-of-Province PTS Instructors

November 21, 2025

The FSA recently resolved a grievance with BCIT that may have implications for some of our extra-provincial members who have been employed in Part-time Studies (PTS), also known as Flexible Learning. If you taught in PTS from a location outside of British Columbia after June 2022, or know someone who has, please read the remainder of this post carefully.

On June 5, 2023, the FSA filed a grievance regarding BCIT’s communications to our members working in PTS about residence outside of British Columbia. These communications required members to move within proximity of BCIT or potentially face the loss of their PTS contracts. Following the resolution of this grievance, BCIT will take a case-by-case approach when determining whether to approve out-of-province remote work/employment for members working in PTS, assessing operational needs in relation to the specific work to be completed by the member and the risks associated with the member performing their work remotely from the province or territory in question. Please contact the FSA ([email protected]) if you have any questions about this.

As part of the grievance process, the FSA has contacted members who were affected by BCIT’s communications regarding their residence outside of British Columbia from 2022. If you have been affected and have not yet spoken to the FSA, please contact us before December 15, 2025. If you believe this message may apply to current or former colleagues, please forward it accordingly.

Senior Labour Relations Representative
