March 21: International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
March 19, 2025
Why this day matters
March 21 marks both the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) and, this year, the 60th anniversary of the UN’s International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). This milestone is a reminder that, despite decades of progress, racial injustice remains a pressing global issue.
The day was established by the United Nations to honour the memory of 69 peaceful protestors killed in the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa, a tragic event that galvanized the global anti-apartheid movement. While the UN considers ICERD a groundbreaking step in the fight against racism, it also acknowledges that “too many individuals, communities, and societies still suffer from the injustice and stigma that racism brings.”
How our community takes action
At a time when many are feeling the weight of global conflicts and racial tensions, this day can serve as both a time for reflection and a call to action. For example, through Diversity Circles and FSA initiatives, our community actively works to foster inclusion and equity.
Diversity Circles' first IDERD event in 2019 featured speakers like Indigenous Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller and multicultural education expert Dr. Annette Henry. In 2023, a panel moderated by faculty member Orrett Morgan continued the conversation, bringing together voices committed to fighting racial injustice.
Beyond IDERD, other events and initiatives address issues of racial equity, including this year’s Celebration of Black Excellence and the upcoming CAUT (Canadian Association of University Teachers) Forum for Equity. These initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to creating a community where all members feel seen, heard, and valued.
What can we do?
As we mark this important anniversary, let’s ask ourselves: How can we contribute to a more just and inclusive world? Whether by participating in discussions, supporting racial justice initiatives, or educating ourselves further, each of us can play a role.
