BCIT Policy Implementation: 5110 and 5401

Member Feedback on New BCIT Policy Implementations
Based on feedback from our Members, the FSA is gathering more data on the following two BCIT policy implementations. Please send questions and comments to Member Engagement Officer Matt Greaves.
Policy 5110 Student Attendance and Academic Concessions
This policy, approved last year but going into effect this September, 2026, has generated feedback from Members about the potential negative impacts on faculty workload and academic integrity.
- What are your specific concerns about the impact on your workload when this new policy goes into effect?
- Do you have specific concerns about how the new policy could impact the academic integrity or pedagogy of your courses?
Your feedback is welcome anytime but is highly encouraged prior to September. For further details you may also ask your Program Head or AD about the email sent by Laura Vail on April 24.
Policy 5401 Program Development and Credentials
It’s been two years since the revised Policy 5401 was approved by BCIT EdCo and Board of Governors. Thanks to a savvy amendment by FSA Members on EdCo, the policy passed with a requirement for review after two years. An EdCo working group has just recently been formed.
- What is your experience so far with the reduction in minimum diploma credits triggered by the new policy: have you experienced credit cuts, including eliminating courses, which are impacting your area?
- What has been your experience with the consultation process in the case of program changes and credit cuts: has there been robust and meaningful consultation with all impacted FSA members and departments?
Your feedback is welcome anytime but will be particularly helpful before September 25, 2026.
