Message of Solidarity from an Iranian Canadian FSA Member

November 2, 2022

Human beings are members of a whole
In creation of one essence and soul
If one member is afflicted with pain
Other members uneasy will remain
If you have no sympathy for human pain
The name of human you cannot retain
― Saadi Shirazi, 1213- 1291

To My Colleagues

In light of the continued violence against women, students, and civilians in Iran, we stand in solidarity with our students and colleagues of Iranian descent during these difficult times. Our thoughts are with the Iranian people, students of all ages, and families who are experiencing these events in Iran and who are fighting for their human rights.

The death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old girl who died while in the custody of the morality police in Iran, along with the deaths and detainments of hundreds of protesters in Iran, have brought anguish, sadness, frustration, and anger to so many around the world. While detained, Mahsa fell into a coma shortly after collapsing at a detention centre and died three days later in a hospital, with allegations of torture and ill-treatment.

During this time of frustration and fear, it is ok to not be ok. If you have students, colleagues, employees, managers, neighbours, and friends of Iranian descent, please be more understanding of what they are going through right now. They may seem to be present with you in class, at work, in meetings, and in gatherings, but they may not be mentally present.

Iranian students studying overseas or newly landed skilled-worker immigrant professionals in Canada are experiencing emotional turmoil right now and may need extra support. Please be understanding of their needs and do guide them to get the support our institution (and others) can provide during these difficult times.
