Keeping An Eye On Learning in Flexible Education

September 1, 2023

Are you teaching into Flexible Learning (formerly Part-Time Studies)? If so, we have a request. The FSA wants to know whether either of the following two things have happened to you:

  1. You are offered a PTS contract, accept it, and prepare to teach the course. The course is soon thereafter cancelled—likely due to low enrollment—and you are not compensated for the work you have done in preparation to teach.
  2. You are offered a PTS contract that is less than a standard rate as defined in the Collective Agreement. Though improper, this has occasionally happened if a course has less enrollment than an arbitrary “break even” number of students. Consequently, BCIT wrongly proffers a contract on a pro-rata or discount basis based on the number of students below the break-even number.

If either of these have happened to you, please contact the FSA as soon as possible by emailing us at [email protected]. Include as much detail as you can in the message, as this will help us expedite the process. We are keeping an eye on potential contract violations and need your help.

There are dozens of ways that the FSA can help members improve conditions at BCIT and in the wider community Get Involved Please let us know how we can improve this site. We want to hear from you! Website Feedback
