Black Leaders in BC Labour History
February 2, 2024
The BC Labour History Centre has a number of resources available to aid learners wishing to know more about the history of working people and labour movement in this province, including histories of working-class Black leaders. Many accounts of Black leadership in BC labour remain untold, some are lost. I know from my own research that references exist to Black leaders in coalmining unions dating back to the turn of the 20th century, with few further details available. The sliver of Black BC labour history from the Centre is nevertheless fascinating. Among other posts, you can read about Frank Collins, President of the Vancouver Local of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters; watch an interview with CUPE activist Michele Alexander; and learn about the fascinating lives of trade unionists William St. John, Emmitt Holmes, and Abe Mortimer.
In solidarity and happy reading,
