April GM Recap: Budget Passes and More

April 24, 2024

Our April 24, 2024 General Meeting was the last of the school year, with the triannual GMs beginning again in October 2024. Members in physical attendance and online were welcomed by elder Carleen Thomas from the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation, who set a positive and welcoming tone for the meeting. The FSA thanks Carleen for her efforts and Indigenous Initiatives for helping to organize.

The GM contained a number of important updates, both from members and guests. Larry Savage, CAUT’s Collective Bargaining and Organizing Chair, discussed the state of bargaining in the post-secondary sector, contextualizing recent wage gains amid soaring inflation. We also heard updates from members Andrea Matthews and Bobby Sidhu, who sit on BCFED Standing Committees–the FSA still has several open committee positions available–and received a Board election update from Returning Officer Denise Calvert.

The most important business conducted was related to union operations, with the membership approving a 2024-25 operating budget of $2,269,000. Follow the link for details, including previous budgets and audited financial statements.

It was, indeed, a meeting stuffed with content, only some of which is captured in this update. For more, see the meeting slide deck. Minutes will be available soon.
