Bargaining a New Collective Agreement: A Primer for FSA Members
April 22, 2022
FSA members’ collective agreement (CA) with BCIT is set to expire July 1, 2022 (though it will remain in effect until bargaining concludes). While a CA is a legal document established through negotiation, its life begins long before union representatives and the employer sit down to bargain. For the union, this pre-history involves research, committee formation, and proposal creation. FSA members have indeed been hard at work since well before the New Year: gathering member comments, reading relevant CAs, and creating proposals.
Yet the whole process remains in its early days. As you can see from the helpful flowchart produced by FSA President Colin Jones, the team is still in the process of developing its initial proposals. As we move forward, and the bargaining process gathers steam, FSA representatives will continue to keep members updated with the latest details through email and the FSA website.
